Fat Tuesday – Let them eat cake, King Cake that is! A quick & easy version starts with refrigerated crescent rolls!
1 pkg (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1⅓ cups powdered sugar 1 egg 1½ tbsp granulated sugar 2 tsp cinnamon 2 medium Granny Smith apples 2 pkg (8 oz each) refrigerated crescent rolls ¼ cup pecan halves, chopped 4-5 tsp milk Purple, yellow, and green colored sugar for decorating And a plastic baby – be careful that no one swallows it!
Preheat oven to 375°F.
In large bowl combine cream cheese and ⅓ cup powdered sugar until well blended.
Add egg to the bowl, whisk until smooth.
In another bowl combine granulated sugar and cinnamon.
Core, peel and slice the apples.
Toss apple slices with sugar mixture.
Unroll crescent dough; separate into 16 triangles.
Arrange triangles in a circle on the Large Round Stone, or a parchment lined sheet pan with wide ends overlapping in the center and points toward the outside. (Points will extend off edge.)
Using the Baker’s Roller®, roll wide ends of dough toward the center to create a 5″ round opening. (You can also use your grandkids clean hands and pat the dough.)
Spread half of the cream cheese mixture over dough in a continuous circle.
Spread the apple slices evenly over cream cheese mixture.
Pour remaining cream cheese mixture over apples and sprinkle with pecans.
Bring points of triangles up over filling and tuck tips under dough at the center to form a ring.
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
While cake is baking – mix remaining 1 cup of powdered sugar with the milk; whisk the glaze mixture until it’s just thin enough to drizzle.
Remove ring from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes.
Drizzle ring with glaze and sprinkle each wedge with alternating purple, yellow, and green sugar.
COOK’S TIP: King Cakes are oval-shaped to symbolize unity of faiths. Each cake is decorated in the traditional Mardi Gras colors – purple representing justice, green representing faith, and gold representing power.
