Who are we? Where do we go? What’s happening when we feel the exhilaration of pure joy…when our self-love is monumental…when we have an exquisite sense of calm? What part of us moves from anxiety to serenity, from despair to acceptance, or from distraction to the inner silence of harmony in our beings?
Just as gentle rocking calms and soothes a newborn, so too does our consciousness become assuaged with the flowing, continual, easeful motion of the meditative movement of Tai Chi paired with full-body inhalation and exhalation. Full inhalation oxygenates the body stimulating brain function. Full exhalation stimulates the vagus nerve, which connects the brainstem to the body, telling our brain to release any tension, fight, or flight response. This practice, then, moves our mind into an alpha state of consciousness – the state of being awake, but calm and tranquil.
Our consciousness is the part of us that has no shape or form yet holds the magic key to our thoughts and actions. Gentle Tai Chi motion and breath can move us into our highest states of consciousness, where we experience the beautiful silence between the noise of life… where we can feel a union with energy outside ourselves, and perhaps experience bliss, courage, optimism, mercy, illumination. In this silence, we may be in a reverie, have a sense of revelation or transcendence. In this silence, we are vibrating at a higher energetic frequency, moving into that higher state of consciousness.
Flowing Motion, a traditional Tai Chi motion, includes inhaling deeply, arms raised to the light, and deep exhale, arms float down gently to the earth’s energy and repeat for 20 minutes. This “flowing motion” moves our consciousness.
