Our intrepid five-year-old critic, Mila Vincent, and her grandmother, Johannah Luza, made their first trek to The Stage Door Theatre Company in Plano to check out Mary Poppins, a musical they’d never seen before, performed by an adult cast (the company also presents shows performed by youth). Mila, as usual, chose an outfit to match the show — her skirt had pictures of Mary Poppins on it! They loved singing with the cast and meeting the actors, including Hannah Smith as Mary Poppins, Declan Brennan as Bert and Jamie Korthase as Miss Andrew (or, as Mila calls her, the “mean” nanny) after the performance.
Here are Mila and her Grandmother Johannah’s reviews:
Mila: It was so much fun singing “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” when the actors sang onstage and I liked to sing “A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down,” too! Mary Poppins was so nice that I wanted to ask my mom if she could be my nanny sometime. She was the only nanny that Mr. Banks’ kids liked. The other nanny was pretty mean and never smiled but Mary Poppins smiled a lot! When Mr. Banks, the dad, lost all his money, he was going to have to sell a very old vase his mother gave him but the maid knocked it off the shelf and broke it! I didn’t know what would happen next! At the end, Mr. Banks got his job back because Mary Poppins taught everyone a lesson— that everything is possible, even the impossible.
Johannah: The Stage Door Theatre Company in Plano is a non-profit theater run mostly by volunteers and it’s so easy to see that everyone loves what they do. This was the first time I’ve seen a production of Mary Poppins and Mila and I both enjoyed it so much. Mary Poppins was perfect just as the two children in the play think she is. Every actor did a great job and it’s so nice to see the dedication that MaryAnn Morrow, the director, has put into this theater!
