Katharine Lee Bates (Aug. 12, 1859-March 28, 1929) was a poet, a professor, a social activist, a suffragette and the first female author of a textbook on American literature. She wrote “America the Beautiful” in the hope that it would bring a nation fractured by the Civil War and inequality to think of itself as one country reaching together for justice and compassion. Bates was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
