By Brian Parman — Director, The Point & Pavilion at CC Young ~
When Covid-19 was declared a pandemic, the first decision made was to close The Point building on CC Young’s campus. The Point building is our non-residential community center where we offer a wide variety of life-enriching lectures, art classes, movies, and a robust fitness program for residents and the community. The closure brought all programs to a complete standstill.
Our team immediately began to look for ways to create new experiences for our residents and community friends who could no longer visit The Point. One idea was to set up an improvised television studio in our auditorium. The new television studio allowed us to broadcast a variety of exercise classes led by our wellness coordinator over our in-house closed-circuit television network. Our broadcast schedule soon expanded to include tai chi classes, guided meditation, book reviews, interactive game shows, technology classes, special virtual music programs, daily devotionals, worship services, and more.
Another challenge we faced was how to allow our residents to socialize and head off boredom due to isolation during the required shelter-in-place directive. We have published a monthly calendar of events to inform our members about what was happening on our campus. What began as an idea to “replace the monthly calendar” morphed into a bright and colorful weekly “Staycation Guide” filled with time-passing tips, puzzles, book suggestions, a weekly campus broadcast channel schedule, and reading material.
Our whole organization has pivoted to adapt to new campus restrictions brought on to safeguard against COVID-19 to spread a little joy and connection as we go.
How are you and yours adapting to COVID-19 restrictions? How can you think outside of the box, while still following established state and local guidelines? How can we all make lemonade from these lemons?
Here are some of our favorite ideas and resources from our past ‘Staycation’ guides to inspire you.
