Getting Beyond the Fears that Hold Us Back

It’s the start of a new year, and you have an idea of what you’d like to make happen in the next twelve months.   If you’re like me, setting intentions and dreaming up goals is the easy part. Making them happen is where it gets sticky.

Are you struggling with taking actions to make progress on your goals? If we can bring our goals out of our head and down to the ground where the grunt work takes place, we stand a much greater chance of making them happen.

But getting busy with the grunt work is challenging.  It’s where the road blocks to our success enter in. It’s when the rubber needs to hit the road and we must actually take action that we seem to get hung up and stalled out.

What is usually underneath it all, holding us back from committing to those actionable steps each day, is frequently a nasty four-letter word. No, it’s not the one you’re thinking of, it’s F-E-A-R.

Fear is what prevents us from taking our goals from that lofty place in minds down to the nitty-gritty daily tasks – the committed actions – the smaller steps that eventually will lead to making our goals a reality.

We get stuck.

We’re afraid of not achieving what we set out for. Afraid of not being good enough, smart enough, strong enough, or just plain enough. We’re afraid of failing.

So, we either don’t follow through long enough to reach our goals, or worse yet, we don’t even start.  At midlife, we simply can’t let that happen! This is it my friends! This is our chance to get moving toward our dreams and goals!

Tackle the fears.

Grab a sheet of paper and write down what the absolute worst result could be from taking daily steps toward your dreams.  Look at what you wrote. Truly examine your words and first, ask yourself if you’re being rationale. Then ask yourself if you will feel more regret for trying and failing, or for never even trying at all.

There’s your answer.

Kick fear to the curb. The worst-case scenario from taking steps toward your goals – is that you may fail. Big deal.  You can live with failing if you can honestly say you’ve given it your all – your absolute best shot. All your fears coming true is still less excruciating than spending the rest of your life feeling regret.

What are you doing still sitting there reading this?! Move it! Get yourself busy right now taking actions to gear up for your ground plan!

Cheers to achieving our goals and living our dreams, or to failing, but having given it everything we’ve got.
